Follow the steps below to focus the camera manually.

  1. Rotate the focus mode selector to [M]. will appear in the display.


  2. Focus manually using the control ring. Rotate the ring left to reduce the focus distance, right to increase.

    Use the [CONTROL RING] option in the setup menu to reverse the direction of rotation for the control ring.

  3. Take pictures.

Quick Focus

To use autofocus to focus on the subject in the selected focus area, press the [AEL/AFL] button. Use this feature (available only in manual focus mode) to quickly focus on a chosen subject.

The [AUTOFOCUS SETTING] > [INSTANT AF SETTING] option in the shooting menu controls how the camera focuses when the [AE-L/AF-L] button is pressed. Select [AF-S] for single AF (focus is adjusted each time the button is pressed), [AF-C] for continuous AF (focus is adjusted continuously while the button is pressed).


Checking Focus

The following options can be used to check focus in manual focus mode.

The Manual Focus Indicator

The white line indicates the distance to the subject in the focus area (in meters or feet according to the option selected for [FOCUS SCALE UNITS] in the setup menu), the blue bar the depth of field, or in other words the distance in front of and behind the subject that appears to be in focus.

Focus Zoom

To zoom in on the current focus area for precise focus, press the center of the command dial (if [ON] is selected for [FOCUS CHECK], the camera will also zoom in when the dial is rotated). Press the dial again to cancel zoom.

Focus Peaking

If [FOCUS PEAK HIGHLIGHT] is selected for [MF ASSIST] in the shooting menu, high-contrast outlines will be highlighted in the manual focus display. To focus, rotate the control ring until the subject is highlighted.
