AF MODE

Choose how the camera focuses during movie recording.

Option Description
MULTI The camera selects the focus area automatically.
TRACKING The camera tracks the subject automatically.
AREA The camera focuses on the subject in the selected focus area.

FOCUS AREA

Choose the focus area for autofocus (aAutofocus). You can also select the area for manual focus and focus zoom.

ROTATE FOCUS POINT

Choose whether focus-area selection is bounded by the borders of the display or “wraps around” from one edge of the display to another.

Option Description
ON Focus-area selection “wraps around” from one edge of the display to another.
OFF Focus-area selection is bounded by the borders of the display.

AF-C CUSTOM SETTINGS

Select focus-tracking options for autofocus.

TRACKING SENSITIVITY

This parameter determines how long the camera waits to switch focus when an object enters the focus area behind or in front of the current subject. The higher the value, the longer the camera will wait.

The higher the value, the longer it takes the camera to refocus when you attempt to switch subjects.

The lower the value, the more likely the camera is to switch focus from your subject to other objects in the focus area.

SUBJECT DETECTION SETTING

The camera automatically detects and focuses on a subjects of a selected type.

SUBJECT DETECTION

Enable or disable the subject detection.

SELECT

Select the type of subjects to be detected.

Option Description
gFACE The camera detects and tracks focus on human faces.
EANIMAL The camera detects and tracks focus on dogs and cats.
FBIRD Camera detects and tracks focus on birds and insects.
GAUTOMOBILE The camera detects and tracks focus on the body or front ends of cars, primarily those of types used for motor sports.
HBIKE The camera detects and tracks focus on the riders of motorcycles and bicycles.
IAIRPLANE The camera detects and tracks focus on the cockpits, noses, or bodies of airplanes and drones.
JTRAIN The camera detects and tracks focus on the driver compartments or front ends of trains.

A single subject of the chosen type detected in or near the focus area will be marked with a white frame.

If multiple subjects are detected in the focus area, the camera will select one automatically.

You can choose a different subject by tapping the LCD monitor to reposition the focus area.

If the selected subject leaves the frame, the camera will wait a set time for its return and consequently the white frame may sometimes appear in locations where no subject of the chosen type is seen.

Subject detection options can also be accessed via shortcuts (aShortcut Options).

AF+MF

Select ON to enable manual focus while shooting with autofocus. Press the function button to which AF-ON is assigned to cancel manual focus.

INSTANT AF SETTING

Choose how the camera focuses using autofocus when a button to which focus lock or AF-ON is assigned is pressed in manual focus.

Option Description
AF-S The camera focuses when the button is pressed.
AF-C The camera focuses while the button is pressed.

AF RANGE LIMITER

Limit the range of available focus distances for increased focus speed.

LIMITER SELECT

Enable or disable the AF range limiter and set the focus range.

Option Description
PRESET2 Limit focus to a range from 5 m to infinity.
PRESET1 Limit focus to a range from 2 m to infinity.
CUSTOM Limit focus to a range of distances defined by a minimum and maximum.
OFF Focus limiter disabled.

CUSTOM SETTING

Set the minimum and maximum distances when CUSTOM is selected for LIMITER SELECT.

Choosing a focus range that includes distances shorter than the minimum focus distance of the lens disables the focus limiter.

The values listed and displayed for the focus limiter may differ from the actual focus distance.

Focus range can be set independently when using lenses equipped with focus range selectors. Be sure that the option selected in the camera menus overlaps with that chosen with the lens.

The focus limiter will be disabled when SUBJECT DETECTION SETTING is on.

The following additional operations can be performed when CUSTOM is selected:

  • You can tap two objects on the LCD monitor to choose the focus range.
  • Instead of tapping an object in the display, you set the maximum focus distance to infinity by rotating the focus ring.

FOCUS CHECK

The display will automatically zoom in on the selected focus area when the focus ring is rotated in manual focus mode.

Press the focus stick (focus lever) to cancel focus zoom.

The zoom position is centered on the current focus area and changes when the focus area is changed.

FOCUS CHECK LOCK

Choose whether focus zoom remains in effect once movie recording begins.

TOUCH SCREEN MODE

Choose the shooting operations performed using touch controls on the LCD monitor.

Mode Description
AF
  • When using autofocus, the camera initiates focus when you tap your subject display. The camera will continue to adjust focus for changes in the distance to the subject until you tap the AF OFF icon.
  • When using manual focus, you can tap the display to focus on the selected subject using autofocus.
AREA Tap to select a point for focus or zoom. The focus frame will move to the selected point.
OFF Touch screen mode off.

In AREA mode, the focus area will move to the selected point, but the focus will not be adjusted.
